The Unifi EdgeRouter X is the standard Ethernet router we use in our Always-On wifi systems. The EdgeRouter is not a wireless router.. it just connects to access points that are the actual wireless antennas. The EdgeRouters we install are configured to work with our network, and this configuration is saved to the device even if the router is unplugged from power.  If the device were to lose it’s configuration (by someone using the pin-hole reset switch on the back of the router, for example) the router will need to have our configuration file uploaded to the router before I can work again. Here are instructions on uploading the LMi config file:

First, it would be a good idea to download the user manual for the EdgeRouter here.. There are illustrated step-by-step guides for connecting that can be helpful.

Second, you will need to have a computer with an Ethernet interface, and you will need to know how to adjust TCP/IP settings on this computer. We will assume that both are true for the purposes of this technical note. Now to the steps…

  1. Plug in the EdgeRouter to power.
  2. Attach port eth1 to the Ethernet port on your computer using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Set computer’s IP to 192.168.1.100, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1
  4. In you web browser, go to http://192.168.1.1 after the router boots up…(it does take a minute)
  5. Login as user ubnt with password ubnt, Accept license agreement if asked.
  6. Skip Basic Setup/Setup Wizrard.
  7. Click System on bottom menu.
  8. Click Restore Configuration in the Configuration Management section.
  9. Upload the LMi config file which can be downloaded here: edgeOS_ERX_LMi_Config.gz
  10. Accept and then reboot. Plug back in any access points or computer Ethernet cables into ports eth1, 2, 3 or 4
  11. The Ethernet connection to the internet (i.e fiber modem) goes into port eth0.
  12. At this point, the router should be set to work with LMi’s Always-On wifi system.
  13. You will want to restore the TCP/IP settings on the computer you used to DHCP, so it can obtain an IP address automatically.
