Mailing List Management

LMI.net offers web-based mailing lists for discussion, announcements, or whatever your heart desires. We use an open-source, python-based software suite, Mailman for our mailing lists. Unlike Majordomo, Mailman is easy to manage, and doesn’t require the semi-divine intervention of some grumpy admin to change simple options. In fact, your Mailman list is configurable directly from the web, by you, with easy-to-comprehend options, each of which comes with a link that, if followed, explains the purpose of said option. And as if that weren’t enough, each list member has a configurable profile (with a look and feel you, the list owner, can set, if you so desire), set in a very similar manner. Mailman is a powerful list server, and LMI is proud to offer it.

List types

There are two types of lists you can get. Announce lists, and discussion lists.

Announce

Announce lists are broadcast-only. The owner/admin sends out announcements to the list. This is the kind of list a band or organization needs to tell people about upcoming events, sales, etc..

Discussion

In a discussion list, every member can participate. These usually center around a common topic – hobbies, arts, whatever. These lists are more expensive than announce lists since they tend to generate more traffic.

Support

Mailman has concise, friendly documentation. All options for a mailing list can be found on your administrative web page, each with an explanation that can be read by clicking “Details for (option)”. Additionally Mailman has a user and admin manual, as well as more than one set of FAQ’s. On account of the ample documentation, and because Mailman is an extremely flexible listserv with many options, LMI can provide only initial support to get you up and running, with additional support afterward for solving bugs and service issues. After a certain point, however, we must charge for additional basic support at the rate of $50/hour.
